And
they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not
forsaken them that seek thee” (Ps 9:10; KJV). To paraphrase Psalm 9:10 it says
that those people who know the NAME of the Lord will confidently put their
trust in him and that God will not forsake them. So why should we put our trust
in God? As this verse says, it is because we know his name. His name
encompasses his character and his nature. So, when we understand that God is
love and how much he cares for us and all he has done for us, then we can trust
him.
In
John 6:29 Jesus himself tells us that the work God requires of us is to believe
in Jesus. If we do that then we will experience happiness (Prov 16:20). There
are many other places in the Bible where it talks about the benefits of trusting
him. As we trust in God, we receive his direction (Prov 3:5-6), peace (Isa 26:3),
the desires of our hearts (Ps 37:4-6) and will not be moved by evil news (Ps
112:7).
The
following verses from the prophet Jeremiah really summarize it all: “Blessed is
the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be
as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river,
and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be
careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit” (Jer
17: 7-8).
The
more we get to know God and his character the easier it will become for us to
trust him.

There
are always so many areas in our lives that we feel a need for God to change. Often,
we get frustrated with our lack of progress. It is easy to want to try to do
the changing ourselves, with our own effort but this does not work. We need to
cooperate with God and allow him to do the doing.
So,
what do we do? Well the word says the only work we need to do is to believe (John
6:29), to have faith; without faith we cannot please God (Heb 11:6). How does
faith come? Well, we all have faith (Rom 12:3) but our faith grows by hearing
the word (Rom 10:17). Everything in God’s kingdom is by faith, not human
effort. If we want to be all God wants us to be, to be changed, then we need to
be radical for him. God’s word is truth (John 17:17) and he tells us that if we
know the truth it will set us free in all areas of our lives (John 8:32).
God
talked to us through Moses and Joshua about being radical with the word. Moses
said God’s word must be in our hearts. He said to teach it to our kids all the
time, he said to write the word on our gates and doorposts (bathroom mirrors?),
to bind it on our hands and hang it before our eyes (Deut 6:6-9) (have it on
our computers?). Joshua said the word should always be in our mouths, we should
meditate it day and night (Josh 1:8) (have it playing in the car?). Now that’s
radical. But see what Joshua also said would happen if we were radical about
the word. He said that saturating in the word would cause us to do the word (be
changed) and that we would then have success and prosper. Wow, I want that, how
about you? Let’s do it. Let’s rest in God’s love (Matt 11:28-30), do our part
and see God work in us, through us and on our behalf. Have a blessed day in the
word.

“No
temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful,
who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the
temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it”
(1 Cor 10:13; KJV).
This
is one of those special verses for me. The Greek word for temptation has a
wider meaning than just temptation to sin; it can mean trial and adversity. So,
what this verse means is that the trials you face are no different than from
what everyone faces, so don’t feel you have been picked out for unique
treatment. Be encouraged as the apostle Paul teaches us in this verse that God
will not allow the trial to overwhelm you and he will provide the way out;
praise God.
So
how will God help? Well first of all he exhorts us to cast our cares on him as he
cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). Be patient (Heb 6:12), get into the word and prayer
so you can hear from him. One of the main ways he will show us the answer to
our tests and trials is in his word. Find the direction for your situation in
the Bible. For example, if you need healing, meditate, confess and build up your
faith with scriptures such as: “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by E-sai-as
the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses” (Matt
8:17) and “by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Focus on God’s promises,
speak them and the answers will come. We serve a faithful God who never changes
(Heb 13:8).

until something happens. I saw this on a sweat shirt and liked it. This doesn’t
mean we have to keep asking God for the same thing over and over again. Once we
have asked, we stand in faith, believing, praising and thanking God for what we
have asked for until we see the victory in the natural with our eyes.
“Therefore
I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive
them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24; KJV). What this mean is that when we
pray, we must believe that we have received the answer to our prayer, even
though the actual manifestation in the physical realm may not appear immediately
but may take some time. However, in the interim, we must stand and maintain our
faith because: “faith and patience inherit the promise” (Heb 6:12).
As
I was thinking about this it reminded me of the story of the paralyzed man and
his 4 friends who wanted to bring him to Jesus so he could get healed (Mark
2:3-12). As you know, they couldn’t get into the house where Jesus was teaching
because of the crowds but they were determined and full of faith. They let their
paralyzed friend down through the roof. The apostle Mark wrote (Mark 2:4): “so
when they had BROKEN THROUGH, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay”.
They had to work hard to break through the roof, and they weren’t about to give
up till they got him to Jesus.
The
woman with the issue of blood, described in the gospel of Luke the physician, (Luke
8:43-48) pushed through a huge crowd to get to Jesus; driven by her faith. In
her condition she would have been regarded as unclean and could have been
stoned for being out amongst people with a bleeding condition.
How
determined are we as Christians to seek Jesus, or pray and believe till we get
results? Again, in Luke’s gospel, (Luke 11:10) we read: “For every one that
asketh receiveth”. I encourage you to be persistent and don’t give up but pray
in faith until something happens, until the expected result manifests.

In
the apostle Marks gospel, chapter 5, is an important lesson on faith. It is a
story of Jairus, a synagogue ruler, and his daughter, who was dying. Jairus had
beseeched Jesus to come and heal his daughter but on the way to his house they
received news that the girl had already died. Then it says that Jesus overheard
the news but ignored what was said. In fact, he replied to Jairus: “Be not
afraid, only believe” (Mark 5: 36; KJV). There are times when we need to do the
same. People may bring us negative reports and talk doubt and unbelief when we
are trying to operate in faith. This is when we need to do what Jesus did in
the story above and ignore the contrary reports.
Hang
around people who are full of faith and who will encourage you to keep believing.
As Jesus said to Jairus, just keep believing regardless of the situation
because God said: “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it
shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and
it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isa 55:11). God is also alert
and active watching over his word to perform it (Jer 1:12). In other words, if you
are standing in faith on a promise from God’s word, in his Bible, it will come to
pass just as you have believed.
