Are You Walking in Step?

“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3; KJV). “Together” means to be one, a unit; like a group of soldiers marching in synchrony. Walking together doesn’t just happen, we have to will or agree to go in the same direction. “Agreed” has the essence of coming together in complete agreement, like coming together in marriage.

This passage from Amos should describe our relationship with God; one with him, walking in union, complete obedience and being quick to repent when convicted. We cannot have our favorite scriptures and ignore others. We cannot be selective in obedience; however inconvenient or hard it may appear to be. If one of those soldiers decided to march at a different rhythm the whole group would be thrown out of step. Unity is a beautiful thing and important to God (Ps 133:1-3). There will never be unity in the body of Christ if we as individuals don’t first make the decision to bring our will into unity with him. We must be in complete agreement with God to walk with him.

Unity in the body of Christ is not just unity and fellowship with men, in our own strength but a unity driven by God’s Spirit in us and other men and women, by God’s grace through faith. Unity releases the power of God. In the early church the people were: “of one heart and of one soul”, no one lacked, the apostles preached with great power, signs, wonders and miracles and the church grew tremendously (Acts 4:32-33).

Focus on walking with God today and see how he will bless your relationships with others.

The Power of Unity

In the apostle John’s gospel chapter 17 and verses 20 through 26 Jesus prayed for all believers (that’s us) that we would walk in unity so that the world would believe in Jesus. Paul exhorted us to: “keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace”, and to pursue the: “unity of the faith” (Eph 4:3, 13; KJV). He said: “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind” (Phil 2:2). In other words, we must walk in the unity the Spirit brings, walk in God’s love, and pursue peace and the one faith in Christ that we all have; be in agreement.

We should never grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:30). Unity will only come as we humble ourselves and allow the Holy Spirit and to teach us from God’s word and change us.  In that beautiful Psalm of unity, Psalm 133, we are clearly shown that God loves unity and that the blessings of God come with unity.

In the early church, unity heralded the coming of the Holy Spirit, with signs, wonders and miracles. Many people were added to that early church, a church characterized by great grace and powerful preaching (Acts 2:46; 4:32; 5:12). Do you get the point?

We should search our hearts; do we contribute to unity or do we stand in the way?

The Power of Unity

In Matthew 18:19 the Apostle tells us that if just two of us can agree on a prayer request God will do it. “For where two or three or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them” (Matt 18:20). Wow, where just two or three come together in unity to call out to God he is there in their very presence! With God one can put a thousand to flight but two can put ten thousand to flight (Deut 32:30).

Unity and the prayer of agreement are so powerful. Praying in agreement is not just everyone praying about the same thing but doing it in perfect accord, perfect harmony and in unity.

God loves unity in his people, it allows him to work, to bless: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! For there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore” (Ps 133:1, 3). The disciples prayed in one accord in Acts 4:24-37 and just look at the results, the house was shaken and they were filled with the Holy Spirit, they preached with boldness, thousand were added to the church and they had all things in common.

Is God telling us something here?

Unity in the Church

The biggest cause of division in the church is strife which is often caused by pride. In the prayer of Jesus in John 17 he asked 4 times for unity in the believers. In the book of Acts, we read many times of how the apostles met together in one accord. The result of this was that their prayers were powerfully answered; they saw many miracles and exponential growth in the church.

There are many times in the epistles where Paul encouraged the church to live harmoniously and he told them how to do this. An example is found Phillipians 2:1-5. Paul asked them to live in harmony with the same mind purpose and love. He then told them to avoid strife and selfishness and: "in the true spirit of humility let each regard others as better than and superior to himself”. He then encouraged them to have the same attitude of humility that Jesus did.

I believe this spirit of humility is crucial for unity in the church, along with love, which enables reconciliation and also causes us to forget our petty differences and focus on Jesus and all those things which unite us.

When this happens there is no room for criticality and discord and the devil will have no way of causing strife and the church will be united and strong.
